About the Triple Crown

People who love outdoor activities are aware that the US has much to offer. There are hundreds of incredible hiking trails in every state. These trails have different difficulty levels and some of them are family-friendly while others are usually used by experienced hikers.

One of the biggest challenges for every long-distance hiker is to finish the so-called Triple Crown hiking trails. Triple Crown Hiking is a term used for three most popular long distance hiking trails - Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. If we combine the length of these three trails we will get an amazing number – 7.900 miles or 12.700 kilometers. It is no surprise why only about 200 people have managed to finish the Triple Crown hiking. These trails are going through 22 states.

Pacific Crest Trail
Pacific Crest Trail

With a length of 2650 miles, this is the second longest hiking trail in the US. This trail goes between Mexico and Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. People who were able to finish it have witnessed the diversity of American nature. The trail goes through deserts, glaciated lands, forests and even some volcanic peaks.

Those planning to complete this trail should be fully prepared and they should work hard on their physical fitness before they start with this journey. Some other natural beauties that hikers can see on their trip are more than 50 mountain passes, 20 canyons and about 1.000 tarns and lakes. Finally, the Pacific Crest Trail moves through seven national parks and 24 national forests. There are also three national monuments near this trail.

Pacific Crest Trail
Appalachian Trail

Although this is the shortest hiking trail (1.175 miles) in the Triple Crown of Hiking, the Appalachian Trail is known for its difficulty. As the name suggests the trail goes through the Appalachian Mountains, but going through picturesque towns and near beautiful rivers and lakes is part of this hiking too.

This trail traverses through 14 American states and people from Massachusetts and New York are the ones that use this trail most frequently. Hikers who have finished this trail say that they went through hard training for over several months before they started their quest. This trail is recommended only to experienced hikers. The best period to start hiking on this trail is in the summer and people usually start hiking from the south to the north. There are more than 250 camps on this trail which makes the task of completing this trail easier.

Appalachian Trail
Continental Divide Trail

The Continental Divide Trail is 3.100 miles long and follows the Continental Divide along the Rocky Mountains between Mexico and Canada. It goes through 5 states – Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. A well-trained and experienced hiker can finish this trail in 6 months, but the fact is that only 200 hikers start such journey every year and not all of them finish it.

Just like the other trails, hikers can expect to witness some of the most exciting natural beauties in the USA (Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, Glacier), but unlike the other trails this one is not yet completed (only 70% of the trail are finished). Although Triple Crown of Hiking is not suitable for beginner hikers, they can always try some section of it and feel the excitement that hiking on these trails brings.
